About Cultural Data Project Launch in Illinois
A new service for arts and culture nonprofits
called the Cultural Data Project will launch soon
in Illinois. It started in Pennsylvania and next
launched in Maryland and then in California. Organizations
across the state will receive a letter or email
announcement on May 1, 2009, and then the
new system will be highlighted at the "One
State" conference in Peoria on June 1 and
2, co-convened by the Illinois Arts Alliance and
the Illinois Arts Council.
This is a very exciting development
for the sector. It is a great new tool to help
nonprofits understand their organizations better
and make good business decisions, without requiring
them to be accountants or to hire consultants.
Imagine generating quarterly board reports, or
comparing and organization's revenues, staffing,
or attendance with other organizations of the
same size or in the same area -- with just a couple
of mouse clicks.
Meanwhile, advocates for the
arts, such as the Illinois Arts Alliance, are
very excited that this system will provide them,
for the first time, hard data (not samples or
surveys) with which to make the case to policymakers
of the importance and value of arts and cultural
organizations.
Free training will be offered
throughout the state beginning in May, and beginning
in the summer, the new system will enable grantseekers
to provide customized financial information as
required by different funders. Look for your announcement
in the mail around May 1; meanwhile,
the
task force has made available a special sneak
preview of what's coming.
