2008 Summer Retreat Summary
The group planned five sessions for the coming year: "Increasing Prices and Decreasing Availability: Food Issues in the Chicago Area," The Effects of Welfare Reform and What Came After," "Assessing Progress of the Plan for Transformation," "The New Presidential Administration: How Will it Address Poverty?" and "The State of Working America: A Coversation with Jared Bernstein." Alison Janus completed her service as co-chair, and Jim Lewis was welcomed as new co-chair to work with continuing co-chair Amy Rynell.

NEW! Facing Race: 2007-2008 Legislative Report Card on Racial Equity in Illinois (pdf, 4/08)
This report from Applied Research Center reviews 56 bills introduced in the Illinois 95th General Assembly, that, if signed into law by the Governor, would have the most direct positive and negative impacts on communities of color. It also evaluates the Governor and legislators on their responses to these initiatives.

Funding Principles for Ending Homelessness
The Partnership to End Long Term Homelessness represents a broad range of funders working together toward the goal of ending homelessness. They have developed a set of core funding strategies to assist foundations, corporate funders, and private philanthropists in their work.

Mayor Richard Daley's Office on Domestic Violence has released an assessment describing every level of government, non-for-profit and private response to domestic violence.


Welfare Reform Extension Act of 2005 (3/05)
The Congressional Budget Office released the report about a House bill that extends existing welfare laws. CBO estimates that the bill will increase direct spending by $83 million in 2005 and by $237 million over the 2005-2015 period.

Changes in Participation in Means-Tested Programs (pdf, 4/05)
The Congressional Budget Office released this report about the 60 percent drop in welfare recipients since the early 1990s.

This Brookings Institution report examines neighborhood variation in access to social services in three metropolitan areas, including Chicago.

America's Struggling Families
Nationwide, one-third of all families live with under $35,000 a year. The Coalition on Human Needs compiled Census data into a state-by-state table of families with incomes under $35,000.

Escaping Low Earnings (5/04)
Job changes are an important part of the process by which workers escape or enter low-wage status, according to this report from the National Poverty Center at the University of Michigan.

Declining Employment Among Young Black Less-Educated Men (4/04)
The National Poverty Center at the University of Michigan reports that the decline in employment of young black men can be attributed to high incarceration rates and enforcement of child support policies.
