New Publications

Economic Outlook 2009 is based on responses to a recent Donors Forum survey from 260 nonprofit organizations and 54 grantmakers in Illinois -- organizations directly affected by the economic downturn and mortgage crisis as well as grantmakers that fund them. Among other findings, both grantmakers and nonprofits reported that the sector has not yet felt the full impact of the economic crisis. The report also shows how nonprofits and grantmakers are responding to economic challenges.

Donors Forum's Illinois Nonprofit Economy Report includes valuable information on the growing role that nonprofits play throughout Illinois. According to the report, last year Illinois nonprofits employed more then 427,000 workers -- providing almost as many jobs as the state's three largest Fortune 500 companies (Boeing, Walgreens, and State Farm) do together, worldwide.

Daring To Lead 2006: A National Study of Nonprofit Executive Leadership (March 2006)
Daring to Lead 2006, published by CompassPoint Nonprofit Services, is a comprehensive national study of executive leadership at community-based nonprofits. The Donors Forum partnered with CompassPoint to gather data from nonprofit executives in the Chicago region.

Based on nearly 2,000 surveys from eight metropolitan areas, the report provides current data on executive turnover, compensation, career plans and retirement. It also explores leading causes of executive burnout--in particular, widespread frustration with boards of directors and funders. It identifies the skills that community-based executives most want and need to build along with the professional development strategies that they employ. The report concludes with recommendations to executives, boards, funders and capacity builders.

    In Perspective (June 2003)
Based on a March 2003 survey, this report offers evidence on how the economic downturn, and the subsequent drop in giving from many sources, affected the nonprofit sector. The results show that local foundations and corporate giving programs have less to give and therefore are changing the way they make grants. The report also found that nonprofits are struggling with the triple effect of drops in funding from foundations, corporate giving programs and state government.
