What if the answer is no?
  • Don't take it personally.
  • Do follow up. Call the program officer and listen respectfully to the reasons why your proposal was declined. Learn from those reasons.
  • Do ask whether you should apply next cycle.
What if the answer is yes?

Congratulations!
  • Do send a thank-you letter, preferably from the CEO or the Board Chair.
  • Do respect all reporting requirements and meet scheduled deadlines.
  • Negotiate recognition: press releases, plaques, etc.
