After you have assessed what types of funding you need and how you will use the funding, you are ready to begin the process of identifying who might provide that funding.

There are five major categories of funding sources: This section will help you determine which categories of funding sources are most appropriate for your need. Use this knowledge to prioritize the time you spend researching potential funders, which is outlined in more detail in the next section, Researching Potential Funders.

While the Donors Forum's primary focus is private foundations, we also provide guidance on raising funds from other sources.

Diverse Revenue is the Key
All donors will want to know that you have a plan that includes a diverse mix of funding types and earned income. Foundations should be just one part of your overall fundraising plan...and your fundraising plan should include approaching more than one potential funder.
