The Chicago-area community has responded
generously to the relief efforts following Hurricane
Katrina on the Gulf Coast. Foundations and corporations
have donated $63 million to organizations providing
food, shelter and other necessities to the victims of
the disaster.
To create a complete picture of the
Chicago-area philanthropic response to this tragedy,
the Donors Forum is collecting information from regional
foundations and corporations about their contributions

Abbott
$2 million in cash donations and an initial $2 million
in nutritional and medical products to help victims
of the disaster.
Accenture*
Accenture and its employees have committed more than
$800,000 to be used for immediate hurricane relief.
In addition, Accenture expects to make a significant
contribution in services and technology to the overall
recovery and reconstruction efforts.
Bank of America*
Contributions to relief efforts as of September 29:
$1.7 million from employees to the company's matching
gifts program, $1.4 million given by Bank of America
customers at their banking centers, and a $1 million
foundation grant. Bank of America also deployed mobile
ATMs and banking centers to help Texas evacuees open
new accounts, cash checks, and accept prepaid cards
issued by FEMA and relief organizations. The bank activated
payment deferrals for home mortgages, home equity financing,
car loans and credit cards.
BP America Inc.*
$10 million to humanitarian relief efforts. The American
Red Cross will receive about $4 million from BP, including
matching donations from its employees and retail marketers.
The remainder will go to a number of Gulf Coast-area
relief efforts, including about $1.5 million to be distributed
to Houston-area efforts to assist the thousands of evacuees
moving to the area.
Baxter Healthcare Corporation*
$1 million toward relief efforts and matching qualifying
contributions by Baxter employees on a 2:1 ratio. Baxter
is also donating products from the company's manufacturing
plants across the country.
The Boeing Company*
More than $9.3 million contributed by employees and
the company to the American Red Cross for relief efforts.
CDW*
More than $605,000 through a fund drive for Hurricane
Katrina relief. This includes a 4:1 company match for
the first $100,000 of coworker contributions and an
additional 1:1 company match for the second $100,000.
Proceeds of the fund drive go to the American Red Cross,
America's Second Harvest, the Salvation Army and Habitat
for Humanity. Coworkers also voted to donate the Holiday
Party funds to hurricane relief. CDW is also providing
information technology assistance to the American Red
Cross and City of Chicago to coordinate and track non-cash
donations to hurricane victims who have relocated to
Chicago.
The Chicago Community Trust*
$25,000 to the Baton Rouge Area Foundation and $25,000
to the Chicago Chapter of the American Red Cross.
Chicago Foundation for Women*
Chicago Foundation for Women's African American Leadership
Council and the Sistuh Fund Giving Circle established
the Chicago
Katrina Relief Fund for Women and Children to accommodate
the special needs of the thousands of women expected
to relocate to Chicago as a result of the Hurricane
Katrina tragedy.
Circle of Service Foundation*
Matching grants for board members and employees to any
verifiable hurricane support funds. The foundation also
pledged $125,000 to Union for Reform Judaism and $125,000
to Jewish United Fund.
CNA Foundation*
CNA's Disaster Relief Assistance Program has donated
money to its employees who have been affected by Hurricane
Katrina. CNA employees may volunteer up to 22.5 hours
of work time toward activities in support of Hurricane
Katrina relief efforts. Cash donations to the American
Red Cross will be matched with a minimum donation of
$25 up to $5,000 per year.
DeKalb County Community Foundation*
To address the needs of Hurricane Katrina's evacuees
arriving into the region, DeKalb County Community Foundation
and the Kishwaukee United Way met with over 31 local
social service organizations and developed a plan for
intake, transitional housing, health care, employment
and education.
John and Susan Dewan Foundation*
Established a Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund to help
schools in the Gulf Coast region rebuild and reopen.
The foundation is committing $25,000 to relief efforts
and initiated a matching gift program to match contributions
to the foundation up to a total of $100,000 through
September 30.
RR Donnelley Foundation*
$1 million in support of Hurricane relief efforts.
Emergency Fund*
Collecting contributions to distribute to more than
40 social service agencies throughout the Chicago area
that are assisting evacuees.
Exelon Corporation*
$1 million to the American Red Cross, Salvation Army
and America's Second Harvest. The company has committed
$500,000 and will match employee contributions up to
$250,000 to assist those in need. ComEd is also sending
150 contractor crew members and 36 linemen and support
staff to the Gulf region to assist in power restoration
activities.
Evanston Community Foundation/Harris
Bank*
The Evanston Community Foundation, with the help of
Harris Bank and the Evanston Chamber's Executive Committee,
established the Evanston Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund.
Harris Bank will match the fund up to $100,000 with
donations to national relief efforts.
Foley & Lardner LLP
Raised nearly $320,000 through a donation matching program
to help victims impacted by the disaster. In addition,
the company organized a clothing drive that collected
more than 100 boxes of clothing, shoes and toys to donate
to shelters in need.
Lloyd A. Fry Foundation*
$50,000 to the Heartland Alliance for Human Needs &
Human Rights to help individuals and families affected
by hurricane Katrina resettle in Chicago.
Grainger*
$1 million in cash and products to the ARC Disaster
Relief Effort. The company increased its matching gifts
program from a 3:1 ratio to 4:1 ratio for gifts to ARC.
Hartmarx*
Hartmarx will match employee contributions up to $500
to the American Red Cross, America's Second Harvest
or McCormick Tribune Foundation's Hurricane Katrina
Relief Campaign.
Hospira Foundation
Delivered more than 1.7 million pounds of medications
and devices into affected areas and donated nearly $500,000
in I.V. pump leases. In addition, the Hospira Foundation
donated $300,000 in cash grants and employees pledged
more than $50,000 to the American Red Cross.
HSBC-North America*
$250,000 contribution to the American Red Cross Disaster
Relief Fund. In addition, HSBC will make a further contribution
of $10 on behalf of each employee who contributes to
the company's United Way workplace giving campaign through
September 30. HSBC participated in the national NBC
Telethon on September 2 in support of the American Red
Cross. More than 1,000 HSBC employees answered more
than 26,000 calls and accepted $2.33 million in pledged
donations at seven HSBC sites, representing 7.8 percent
of the total telethon effort.
IBM Corporation*
Contribution of $3.2 million in technology and services
to help relief efforts. IBM employees have contributed
substantial amounts to the Red Cross and other charities.
To facilitate their generosity, IBM opened a payroll
deduction program so that employees can make sustained
contributions throughout the year.
Illinois Bar Foundation*
Accepting donations, which will be forwarded in their
entirety to charitable foundations of the bar associations
in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida, and
earmarked for hurricane relief efforts.
ITW Foundation*
$250,000 to the Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund and matching
all employee contributions (no ceiling) on a 3:1 ratio.
Japanese Chamber of Commerce and
Industry of Chicago (JCCC) Foundation*
Collected $108,000 in donations from corporate and individual
chamber members to give to the American Red Cross.
Kraft Foods*
$1 million in food and cash grants to assist with relief
efforts. This includes $700,000 in food donations and
$300,000 in grants for food and shelter relief efforts.
Additionally, Kraft is providing employees with opportunities
to help through a matching gifts program, food and clothing
drives, and other volunteer efforts.
LaSalle Bank*
The company set up the LaSalle Bank Hurricane Katrina
Relief Fund at The Chicago Community Trust, and will
match all employee contributions to the fund up to $500,000.
The company will divide the collected funds evenly between
the American Red Cross and America's Second Harvest.
John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur
Foundation*
Grants of $1 million and available capital of $5 million
to support reconstruction efforts in the wake of Hurricane
Katrina. The funds will be used primarily to support
the development of permanent affordable housing for
low-income people in Louisiana and Mississippi.
McCormick Tribune Foundation*
The McCormick Tribune Foundation created the Hurricane
Katrina Relief Campaign and raised almost $9.3 million
from more than 47,000 donors. This figure includes a
$1 million match from the foundation.
The McCormick Tribune Foundation Hurricane
Katrina Relief Campaign's first round of approved grants
totaling $1.5 million went to America's Second Harvest,
the American Red Cross and the Salvation Army. The second
round of $2.4 million in approved grants went to 12
quality agencies that are focused on strengthening and
supporting communities impacted by the widespread devastation.
The third round of $3.7 million in approved grants was
awarded in February 2006 to more than 20 nonprofit organizations
providing services to Katrina victims.
Microsoft Corporation*
$1 million to several agencies operating shelters and
distributions centers in the region. To help raise awareness
of donation and volunteer opportunities, Microsoft also
posted links to the American Red Cross and other relief
agencies on its web properties.
Nicor Gas*
Employee contributions up to $200 to designated hurricane
relief organizations (such as the Salvation Army, Red
Cross and IBEW Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund) will be
matched by the company, up to a total of $25,000 this
year.
Northern Trust Company*
$250,000 to American Red Cross and United Way Metropolitan
Chicago's Hurricane Katrina Fund. The company is matching
employee contributions to the American Red Cross, with
no cap on the dollar amount, and is matching other disaster
relief donations from employees under the corporate
matching gift guidelines, up to $2,000. Northern Trust
is financially assisting employees who are housing displaced
survivors and preparing employee collection drives nationally
to assist with supplies, food and clothing.
Oprah's Angel Network*
$1 million to America's Second Harvest to secure and
distribute food to hurricane victims over Labor Day
weekend.
Peoples Energy*
Matching employee gifts to the American Red Cross. Total
of employee gifts and company match is $100,000.
Polk Bros. Foundation*
$20,000 grant to the Baton
Rouge Area Foundation and $25,000 grant to Heartland
Alliance for Human Needs and Human Rights. $25,000 grant
to Oxfam America for work with victims of Hurricanes
Katrina and Rita on the Gulf Coast and Mississippi Delta.
Prince Charitable Trusts*
$25,000 contribution to America's Second Harvest, designated
for the New Orleans Food Pantry. In addition, any donation
made by employees will be matched 2:1.
Quaker/PepsiCo Inc.*
The PepsiCo Foundation donated $2 million for relief
efforts, including $1 million for the American Red Cross
Disaster Relief Fund and $1 million for the Salvation
Army. The foundation also made an initial emergency
$100,000 contribution to American Red Cross Disaster
Relief Fund and is donating water in coordination with
Pepsi-Cola bottlers. PepsiCo is matching all employee
contributions to the humanitarian agency of their choice
and established the PepsiCo Employee Relief Fund to
help associates from its family of companies who have
suffered severe loss. The company also has donated more
than 21 truckloads of snacks and beverages.
Sara Lee Foundation*
More than $1 million in cash contributions and product
donations to aid Hurricane Katrina disaster relief.
More than 80,000 pieces of underwear for men, women
and children have been donated to the American Red Cross.
Working with America's Second Harvest, Sara Lee is donating
shelf-stable meat and bakery products, as well as fresh
products where facilities are available to store them
safely. Sara Lee has set up a Disaster Relief Fund where
employees' contributions will be matched 2:1.
ShoreBank*
Matching employee donations up to $10,000 for organizations
of their choice or to the two recommended: Habitat for
Humanity or The Greater New Orleans Community Foundation.
The bank is working with a local faith-based organization
to collect items needed on a weekly basis.
The Siragusa Foundation*
$10,000 to the American Red Cross for hurricane recovery
and relief efforts.
Target*
$1.5 million donation to the American Red Cross, with
$500,000 for immediate relief efforts for Hurricane
Katrina, and an additional $1 million for ongoing disaster
relief and preparedness. Target is also offering real
estate in Louisiana to the Red Cross to establish a
command center supporting the most heavily impacted
areas of the storm. Target is coordinating large-scale
distribution of essential products requested by the
Red Cross, including such items as water, ice, energy
bars and bug spray. Stores in the affected areas have
been given additional funds to provide in-kind product
donations and grants to local nonprofit organizations.
Company teams also will provide volunteer support.
United Airlines*
United Airlines provided air transportation to Chicago
for hurricane victims, as reported by ABC 7 Chicago
News. With a donation of $50 to one of three relief
funds, United Airlines is offering 500 bonus miles for
Mileage Plus members.
UBS*
$1 million contribution to the American Red Cross. The
company is increasing each employees' matching gift
limit by $1,000 should they wish to give a gift to hurricane
relief. UBS had two facilities destroyed and is working
with nearly 100 employees to help facilitate their needs.
United Way of Metropolitan Chicago*
United Way is playing a major role in providing the
long-term care that enables people to rebuild their
lives, including coordinating the massive effort that
connects individuals to the support programs they need.
It also funds a broad range of services such as transitional
housing, financial support, crisis and mental health
counseling, specialized support for the disabled, and
daycare for children and seniors. To support local efforts,

Walgreen Co.*
More than $1 million to the American Red Cross. The
company also donated truckloads of products and filled
emergency prescriptions at no cost. Nearly $2 million
has been raised for the Red Cross through in-store customer
donations. To date, the company has transferred more
than 500 displaced employees to work at other locations
and has provided emergency financial assistance to more
than 350 employees through the Walgreen Benefit Fund.
Washington Square Health Foundation*
The foundation will entertain "Capacity Grant"
requests from Chicago-area health care facilities that
are receiving significant numbers of Katrina disaster
victims. Guidelines for the grants are posted at www.wshf.org.
Westlake Health Foundation*
$100,000 donation to the American Red Cross.
W. P. & H. B. White Foundation*
$20,000 contribution to St. Sabina Church in Chicago
for its housing and social services assistance to evacuees
from Hurricane Katrina.
